Professional Landscape Design AND Costs

Here's a great question about professional landscape design and the costs of both the design and the project itself.

Hello there,

I am planing to build a home on a new piece of property and it has been suggested to me that I set aside 10 to 15 % of the cost of building for landscape costs.

Does that sound reasonable and what should I pay for a professional landscape design for my property ?.
It is complex and needs to be done properly.

Thanks so much for the advice,

ANSWER

Hi Peggy,
I'll try to break this down into two parts.
Also, take a look at my page Landscaping Cost.

How Much To Expect To Pay For Landscaping
It all depends on how extensive you want your landscaping to be. Some people are happy with simple foundation plants, a front walkway and perhaps a small deck or patio. In that case, you might be looking at about $20,000. Of course that is VERY approximate.

However, you mentioned your property is complex. If there is a lot of grading to be done with possible retaining walls, that will definitely add on to the landscaping costs.

If you want a pool, pond, pergola, etc. these are additional costly items.

I have designed landscapes that cost $10,000 and others that have been $500,000. So it's difficult to give a percentage (such as 10 - 15%) as it depends on what you want and your property.

Professional Landscape Designs
Once again, it depends on the scope of the project. For master plans, or designs of an entire property, plan on between $2000 to $8000 depending on the extent of the design and what is included.

I do feel you will get the best project possible at the best pricing if you hire a professional landscape designer. A designer is looking out for your best interests, just focuses on the design, and can even review bids for you.

I hope this was helpful...Susan
