Trex Deck
Resolving Mold and Mildew Issues

When you spend the time and money building a Trex deck you want to be sure that it looks as great as possible for as long as possible. Although many types of decks are durable, some types of decking will be susceptible to mold and mildew, taking away from the original beauty of the structure.

Trex decking is made of a recycled material which is a desired material for many homeowners who want to preserve the environment by obtaining a deck made from recycled materials. Even though this can be a sturdy and well-made deck, you can find issues with mold and mildew. The good news is that you can resolve problems with very little work on your part. Here's how:

Identify the Spotting Issues

The first thing you need to do is identify the spotting issues, i.e. what types of materials are causing the marks on your decking. This will help you to know just how to address the problem and get rid of the marks on your deck.

Most of the time the spotting is caused by airborne sugars falling from nearby trees and shrubs onto your deck. These sugars will attract mold and mildew thereby causing spotting to occur. Sometimes spores are in the wood fibers that are part of the composite decking components.

Follow the Trex Deck Cleaning Instructions

  • Since Trex is a specialized type of deck made from recycled materials, it should come as no surprise that the Trex Company has specialized instructions for cleaning your deck.
  • The first tip offered by Trex is to avoid high-powered pressure washers, such as those of 1500 psi and over.
  • Also, when pressure washing be sure to hold the pressure washer at least 1 foot away from the deck surface so that you don't mark the surface or harm the wood fibers.

Try an Oxygen Bleach Solution

Another great tip for cleaning this type of decking is to use an oxygen bleach solution.

  • The oxygen bleach is mixed with water and will clean up almost any type of deck.
  • This solution will work to clean away mildew, mold, algae and other types of spotting on your deck and do so without damaging the deck material.
  • It will also take away the gray discoloration on the deck which turns that way due to the sun.

When using this oxygen bleach mixture, all you have to do is keep it on for 15 minutes to let it work its magic and then scrub the deck. Once you have achieved your desired results, simply hose the deck off with water and sit back to enjoy the results.

Regular maintenance is a necessity when it comes to composite decking. I understand that many people are attracted to the "no maintenance" supposed feature of synthetic decks. However, all decks need some maintenance, and my personal opinion is that natural woods should be considered. Sorry!

Oh my!!!!!!!!!! It is beautiful.

Hi Susan,
Thank you for putting so much thought into the design. We really like it, especially the curvilinear shape with clean lines. I love the curved seat wall and hypothetical placement of furniture, the shape of the path, etc. Thanks again for all your help.

I'm getting excited about the plan becoming reality sometime soon.
