That's not to say that plants that flower for shorter times should not be considered. You might fall in love a particular flowering perennial and you must have it! And you should (I have been there). However long blooming perennial flowers add additional color. Here is a list of perennial flowers that will have a long blooming period and that I would recommend. I have had experience with all of them so know about how long they flower for.
You want to look for one of the long blooming bleeding hearts which are the smaller variety, not the Spectabilis. Spectabilis is a larger bleeding heart. It's gorgeous, but the plant will fade away in the summer. Varieties such as Exima, come in pinks and white. These are shade or part shade perennials...and also long blooming perennials. They have a very natural woodland look to them. Photo courtesy of Vermont Flower Farm
The foliage is delicate and it is a medium size perennial. It likes the sun. 'Autumn Joy' is a reliable easy to grow perennial which blooms late in the season for a long time. The water requirements of this perennial is minimal. Catmint 'Walker's Low' I have this plant in my garden. It is such an easy to grow perennial, with pretty, pale purple flowers. It has soft, gray-green foliage and is a medium size flowering perennial. Lavender Lavender 'Hidcote' blooms with purple flowers for a good part of the summer. Pinch back the finished flowers to produce more blooms. Not only does it Lavender look nice in perennial flower beds, but you can also cut the flowers and place them in various places to enjoy their fragrance. It will flush out with a huge number of flowers. When these finish, it will rest briefly and then repeat. This continues into the fall. This Daylily is one of the full sun perennials and is of small to medium size. Photo courtesy of Dutch Gardens. These are the types of perennials that get larger than most. Some will get to be about four feet high, while others will get much, much larger. There are many color to choose from. These hardy plants are very long blooming perennials and the butterflies love the perennial flowers. Coreopsis Coreopsis 'Moonbeam' is a repeat bloomer, similar to Stella D'Oro Daylily. Even if you have a perennial garden design with mostly pinks and purples, the pale, yellow, daisy-like flowers of Moonbeam will blend nicely. Corydalis Lutea This flowering perennial is in the Bleeding Heart Family. It blooms with delicate, yellow flowers all season long, and will even multiply, so it makes a nice, slightly taller groundcover. It is one of the shade loving perennials. Coneflower I love the large, showy, daisy-like flowers of Coneflower. The pink colors are beautiful and they seem to constantly coming out with new hybrids. They are long blooming perennials that do well with minimal care and bloom mid-summer. Black Eyed Susan
This is a late summer blooming perennial with gold flowers and dark brown centers. It's very showy!
