Too much rock in landscaping

I just bought a house in the country that is 10 years old.

The previous owner did not do any landscaping but put river rock all around the house. I do not like the look of rock but like the look of mulch. Removing the rock will be VERY time consuming. Can I get by with putting mulch over the rock and my new plants still be healthy or should I just remove the rock?

ANSWER
I agree with you about the look of rock. It would not be my choice and also prefer the natural look of mulch in the landscape.

I understand...who wants to do tedious work. Yet the problem with placing mulch over the rock is that over time it will seep down and disintegrate and you will be left with the stones again.

It would be best if you removed the stones and started over with new mulch. I like HSB mulch..hardwood shredded bark mulch. It's very shredded.

What I do is about once or twice a year I fluff it up with a rake so that it looks fresh. Apply it 3 inches thick and it will last a few years.

Good luck!

Susan
