Flowering Perennials and Sunny Conditions

by Rene'
(St. Louis)

Here's a question about perennial flower beds, flowering perennials and sunny conditions.

My house faces Northwest. I am in St. Louis. One side of the front gets about 5-6 hours of sun. I am tearing out 20 year old yews and overgrown hollies, etc and totally redesigning the front landscaping. I will be using a combination of evergreens and perennials.
Flowering Perennials - How They Grow In The Sun

I am concerned about whether tall perennials will stand up, being against the house and having no sun at their rear. Are they likely to tip towards the sun and hide shorter plants in front? Thanks!

ANSWER

Hi Rene,
It's seldom that a plant gets sun on all sides. If you think of even evergreen shrubs planted along a house foundation, they do not get sun on all the way around.

Likewise for any perennials that you plant. Somehow plants adapt to this situation. They should grow straight, although they may "look" at the sun more if they don't get enough of it.

As long as you choose the right plants for the right sun condition favored by those plants, you should be fine.

Swimming Pool Flowers | Sun

What type of flowers can withstand direct sun around a pool area?

ANSWER

Flowers for Sun

Hi Debbie,
It depends if you are interested in planting annuals, perennials or flowering shrubs.

For annuals, Geraniums and Zinnia will take full sun.

Some perennials you might consider are Catmint Plant, Butterfly Bush, Coneflower and Salvia.

For shrubs, there are Roses, Weigela, Potentilla (check your Zone), and 'Little Princess' Spirea.

There are many more flowering plants you can use near your swimming pool, but these are some I use over and over again successfully.

What combination of shrubs and perennials would you recommend for full sun beds around a pool in Maine?
