Laying slate stone

by Pamela
(Montclair, Ca)

I bought uniform slate stones mounted on a mesh backing to lay over my cement patio. Each piece of stones on mesh is about 18"x12" and 3/4" thick. What do I use for laying the stone and what do I use for grout?. I can't use a thick mortar bed over my patio because of my door entrances. Would thin-set be acceptable for a good bond with the cement? The patio is smooth.

ANSWER
Actual types of mortar for wet laid stone installations is out of my area of expertise. I would suggest you get in touch with some qualified masons for the correct advice. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
