Large Retaining Wall Landscaping

by Jan
(Monterey, California)

I have a back wall running the entire length of the house 11 feet high. There is 8 feet of space to make lower walls and design a landscape. HELP! All of this is just 13 feet out my back door.
The 11 foot wall is a long, long wall running the entire length of a linear 4,000 sq ft house. I like informal. It is the south side of the house and gets coastal sun and fog.

Jan,
before you do anything you need to obtain the local building and zoning codes for retaining walls. You should also hire a civil engineer to design the wall. This is a very technical project, especially given the constraints of the project area. consider how to stage materials, construction equipment access etc. THis is probably not a do it yourself project. Good Luck

Retaining Wall Plantings
by: Susan

Hi Jan,
Wow...that's a big wall.
However, you could have a lot of fun with it.

Plant vines to grow up the wall to soften it.
How about a wall fountain?
Lighting fixtures on the wall?

As far as plantings go, I would definitely add some trees for scale. Fill in with plants and perhaps some stepping stones leading to a bench, small fountain or even a small pond! Add lots of perennials for color!

Testimonials

Susan,
Thank you for all that you did to help beautify our little plot of paradise. We enjoyed working with you – thanks.

Oh my!!!!!!!!!! It is beautiful.

Hi Susan,
Thank you for putting so much thought into the design. We really like it, especially the curvilinear shape with clean lines. I love the curved seat wall and hypothetical placement of furniture, the shape of the path, etc. Thanks again for all your help.

I'm getting excited about the plan becoming reality sometime soon.
