Front path
by Dana Milne

I would appreciate some help regarding the layout of a path to our house. I would like a path that extends from the sidewalk to both our front door and along our side yard (which leads to a door along the side of the house that we use more). Our front door is not centered. It is on the left edge of our house, furthest from the side yard. How would you lay out the path so that it leads to the front door but is also convenient enough to be used to access the side yard path. FYI, our front yard is 25 ft wide and 16 ft deep. Our house is along one edge of the property and is 16 ft, leaving a 9 ft wide side yard. ANSWERHi Dana, You could create a curved walkway front the sidewalk to the front door. Picture an "s" shape, with the beginning and end being perpendicular to the sidewalk and house. As you get closer to the house, create another curved path leading to the side. This might travel parallel to the house for a short bit before it starts the curve which would bend around the corner. I would make the walk to the main door wider since it is more important (maybe not to you, but aesthetically!). It could be four or five feet wide, while the path to the side entrance (the secondary walk) would be 3 or 4 feet wide. I hope this was helpful.

Hi Susan, Thank you for putting so much thought into the design. We really like it, especially the curvilinear shape with clean lines. I love the curved seat wall and hypothetical placement of furniture, the shape of the path, etc. Thanks again for all your help.
I'm getting excited about the plan becoming reality sometime soon. Elaine, Pennsylvania
