 Extending Patio with Concrete Pavers

My husband and I want to extend the size of our patio as a way to expand our outdoor living space. We have 4 children under the age of 10 so we need all of the space we can get. The existing patio is 12 x 16 1/2. We want to add 4 ft on 3 edges. We are attempting to do a DIY project for the first time. My question is should we add the concrete pavers AROUND the existing pad, or shuld lay pavers ONTO existing pad, build up edges and extend? Also, either way, what should we use to lock in the pavers so they do not shift? We appreciate any advice that you can give us.
